Anti-Otherkin: A Symptom of a Greater Problem

We’ve all heard it before-- outsider commentary on the otherkin community that comes from a completely baseless understanding of what the word otherkin means and how the otherkin community functions. Accusations of culthood, attempts to psychopathologize, equations to large-scale fandoms: all these and more have been thrown at the otherkin community long enough that they’re now considered staples of self-proclaimed “anti-otherkin” rhetoric. But have you ever stopped and considered why such language seems universal to anti-otherkin, and why so few will ever stop and change their assumptions upon being corrected? While some may chalk it up to human stubbornness, a look into Western understandings of religion might hold the key to understanding just where these assumptions come from, and why they don’t seem to be going away any time soon.

Abnormal Instincts: Statistics and Solutions (18+ Panel)

In the alterhuman communities, instincts can be a hot-button topic. Looking at the results of the 2022 Abnormal Instincts survey can not only give us a better view into the commonality of certain types of instincts, but also into what the most popular opinions and intra-community experiences surrounding them are: thoughts around whether controversial instincts are worthy of removing individuals from community spaces, of whether instincts make someone more likely to commit heinous acts, and of whether instincts are acceptable to speak about in the public sphere. This panel will involve both a breakdown where we examine the summarized data of the Abnormal Instincts survey and a deep-dive discussion into some of the controversy that anonymous respondents bring up regarding their own and others' instincts.

Everyone talks about wanting more published nonfiction resources on otherkin, of the “next Field Guide” that the community hopes for. But writing a book on otherkin, or really any alterhuman identity, isn’t a walk in the park-- this brief panel will go into details on what books on otherkin are already out there, what obstacles authors in the community have faced and continue to face, and some potential options that aspiring alterhuman writers can sink their hands (or claws) into.

Litter Box Hoax 2: Legislature Boogaloo

Starting in 2023, US conservatives proposed several anti-transgender laws which also target people for behaving or identifying as animals. This came from an urban legend that satirized transgender restroom access by falsely claiming that schools also offer litter boxes to accommodate furry students.
